Children’s Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies range from bacterial, fungal, viral, to physical injuries.
A child may have a fractured, chipped, or knocked out tooth that may need immediate attention by your family dentist.
Is it a Dental Emergency?
How would you know if something is a dental emergency? And if an emergency does arise, what first-aid measures should you take to manage them?
Take a look at the following questions:
- Is the child bleeding through his/her mouth?
- Is the child in serious pain?
- Does he/she have any knocked teeth?
- Does he/she have any swelling in the mouth?
- Does he/she have any inflammation on the gums?
If your answer is YES to any of these questions, your child might be in a dental emergency and need to see your dentist right away.
Read on to learn more about typical children’s dental emergencies and how to manage them at home.
Tips To Manage Children’s Dental Emergency
Broken, chipped or cracked tooth: Wash your child’s mouth with lukewarm saltwater and apply a pack of ice to his/her face against the affected area. See your Doncaster East dentist immediately.
Knocked-out tooth: If your child’s tooth becomes loose from an injury, call your Doncaster East dentist right away.
While waiting to go to your dentist, let your child rinse his/her mouth with lukewarm saltwater.
Do not attempt to put back the tooth in its socket. It may affect the growth of the developing tooth under the gums.
Bitten tongue or lip: Clean the area with clean, wet gauze and place a cold compress to reduce swelling. If there’s bleeding, apply slight pressure on the affected area for 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops.
